Teachable

Recently, I had an opportunity to hold an interim leadership position above my current role. If they’re helpful at all, I’ve learned a few simple keys that could help you make the most of a similar opportunity!

1. Do a lot of listening.

You’re likely surrounding by people who have more experience, knowledge, or skill than you – soak it all in!

2. Ask clarifying questions.

The decision-making process is different, take the opportunity to get inside the minds of those with a different perspective.

3. Delegate what is normally on your plate.

An interim role likely means you’re taking on additional responsibilities, not less. But you weren’t given more hours in the day! Use the opportunity to pour into and raise up the next generation of leadership.

4. Pursue humility, and be confident in the abilities God has given to you.

If you’re sitting in the chair, God put you there. Recognize it is His hand, praise Him for the opportunity… now go forth and conquer!

5. Prepare, prepare, prepare.

It is intimidating to be the most junior person in the room. Having your boss, CEO, and other executives looking to you for an answer can be unnerving. I find that preparation before meetings, spending the time to study information, and being an expert in your area help to settle my nerves and be a more fruitful contributor.

6. Eat well and rest.

If you’re putting in a hard day’s work physically, mentally, or both, your body needs the fuel to fire on all cylinders and the rest to prepare for tomorrow. I’m writing this one to myself!

And, if you’re married, tell your spouse and children how incredible they are for lending the extra support during this season!

I love you, Sarah! ❤
